wrat01 WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology)
WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A “closed ground-loop circuit” design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers’ reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance.

Onkyo’s advanced AWRAT design for power amplification comprises the following technologies:
1. DIDRC (Dynamic Intermodulation Distortion Reduction Circuitry)
Since the advent of digital audio, signal-to-noise ratios have improved dramatically. However, the S/N ratio reflects static noise only, and takes no account of another type of noise that occurs as the byproduct of sound reproduction—dynamic noise. To reduce this type of noise, Onkyo has developed DIDRC technology for use in our hi-fi components. Despite being beyond the normal range of human hearing, frequencies above 100 kHz are susceptible to clock pulse and other forms of distortion from digital devices. Such distortion in the super high frequency range can generate “beat interference”, which in turn affects the character or atmosphere of the original sound. By improving linearity and reducing distortion in the super-high frequency range, Onkyo’s new DIDRC technology effectively reduces perceptible noise.2. Low Negative-Feedback Design
Too much NFB makes a system susceptible to counter-electromotive force from the speakers, resulting in a drop in perceived sound quality. To avoid this, Onkyo focuses on improving the frequency response and reducing distortion, without relying so much on NFB.3. Closed Ground-Loop Circuits
AWRAT amplifier models employ a sophisticated closed-circuit design in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion.

4. HICC (High Instantaneous-Current Capability)
HICC enables an AWRAT amplifier to immediately cancel the speakers’ reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current required to achieve this also supports the amplifier’s ability to handle speaker impedance fluctuations.

5. Symmetrical Twin-Monaural Construction
Power devices for the left and right channels of AWRAT amplifiers are aligned symmetrically. Each channel has the same electrical and structural design, and signal pathways are uniform in length. This helps to minimize errors in stereophonic playback.

4 VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry)
Virtually removes digital pulse noise for a smooth analog signal.
Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but can’t remove it completely. VLSC employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analog vectors in real time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result—a virtually noiseless, smooth, analog signal based on the digital source that brings out even the most subtle of nuances in music sources (including DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD), DVD Video sources (including high-definition), broadcasts, digital music files such as MP3s, and gaming content.

Three-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry
Standard amplifiers employ a negative feedback (NFB) design that counters distortion by feeding back the opposite phase of the output signal into the input stage. Unfortunately, NFB is easily affected by inverse electromotive forces from the speakers, leading to an increase in circuit noise. Three-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry is a core Onkyo technology incorporating a low-NFB design that makes the sound more natural. Sensitive to oscillations, this circuitry requires very advanced control technology in order to be incorporated into the amplifier.

 

PLL (Phase Locked Loop) Jitter-Cleaning Circuit Technology
Jitter is an unwanted side-effect of the digital-to-analog conversion process. Caused by fluctuations in the time domain of a digital signal, jitter has a detrimental impact on perceived audio quality. PLL jitter-cleaning circuit technology reduces jitter by comparing the input and output phases of the digital signal and creating an accurate clock waveform. This enhances the precision of digital signal processing and noticeably improves audio quality. Jitter-cleaning technology works both for digital signals input via HDMI and for digital signals converted from analog signals inside the receiver itself.
